Between swimming lessons, birthday parties and the weekly shop, family outings can add up fast. The good news is that some of the best days out around Minto and St Andrews do not cost a thing. Our local area is full of parks, gardens and open spaces made for little legs to run and explore, and most are only a short drive from home. Here are five of our favourites to bookmark for the next free weekend.
Campbelltown Billabong Parklands
If the forecast is warm, this is the one. The water play area is a hit with toddlers and big kids alike, and there is plenty of open grass for a picnic rug and a kick of the ball. Shade can fill up quickly on hot days, so it pays to arrive early and claim a spot. Pack the bathers, a change of clothes, sunscreen and a picnic, and you have an easy few hours sorted.
Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan
As Australia's largest botanic garden, Mount Annan is a lovely spot for a slow family wander. Little ones love spotting birds and running along the wide open lawns, and there are quiet corners perfect for a picnic when everyone needs a rest. It is a gentle introduction to nature for preschoolers, and the changing seasonal displays give you a reason to come back throughout the year.
Kids Park, Minto
Right on our doorstep, this friendly neighbourhood park is ideal when you want a quick outing without the drive. There is a playground to keep the kids busy, open space to burn off energy and undercover tables for a snack in the shade. It is a great low-key option for a weekday afternoon or a relaxed weekend catch up with other local families.
Campbelltown Arts Centre
A rainy morning or a hot afternoon calls for something a little different. Entry is free, and there is usually an exhibition or hands-on workshop on to spark curious minds. Outside, the sculpture garden and Japanese garden make a calm, pretty spot for a slow stroll with the pram. It is a lovely way to introduce little ones to art and creativity without spending a cent.
Council Bike Education Open Days
For families with kids finding their feet on two wheels, the free council bike education open days are worth keeping an eye out for. Bring along the bikes, scooters and helmets, and the kids can build confidence in a safe, off-road setting. It is great for coordination and independence, and a fun way to spend a morning outdoors.
At Kids College, our Minto and St Andrews families are lucky to have so much on their doorstep. We love seeing little ones get outside and explore the local area, and these free outings are a lovely way to spend time together as a family.
